British Airways said it will begin operating its San Francisco-London flights on an Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger jet, next year.

The jumbo jet will go into service on the route in April 2015, marking the first time that an A380 serves this particular route.

BA currently operates the A380 on two routes, London-Los Angeles and London-Hong Kong.  It is adding A380 service to Washington, D.C. on October 2 and to Singapore on October 28.

The British flag carrier’s A380 can seat 469 passengers in four separate cabins.  The first-class cabin has 14 suites, each with fully lie-flat seats with a seat pitch of 78”.  The Club World business-class cabin has 97 fully lie-flat seats in a forwards-backwards configuration, all with a seat pitch of 72”.  The World Traveller Plus premium economy section accommodates 55 passengers and there are 303 seats in coach.

BA will operate the A380 as Flight 286 on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  On Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the foreseeable future that flight will be operated using a Boeing 747.  The airline will continue to operate a second flight on the route, also using a 747.
