United Airlines Traffic, Capacity Up in July

United Airlines announced operational results for July 2014.  The airline’s consolidated traffic and capacity increased for the month, while its passenger load factor decreased.

Total system traffic was 19.898 billion revenue passenger miles, or RPMs, a year-over-year increase of 1% from 19.692 billion RPMs in July 2013.  Capacity also rose by 1.6% year-over-year to 22.950 billion available seat miles, or ASMs, from 22.581 billion last year.

Meanwhile, passenger load factor decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 86.7%, down from 87.2% in the same period in 2013.

The airline’s international operations showed the greatest year-over-year improvement, with a 2.7% increase in international revenue passenger miles and a 4.3% increase in international available seat miles.  Domestic operations declined year-over-year, with a 0.4% decrease in domestic RPMs and a 0.2% decrease in domestic ASMs.  Mainline RPMs increased by 1.2% with a 2% increase in mainline ASMs, while regional RPMs increased 0.3% with a 1.1% decrease in regional ASMs.
