U.K. Raises Terrorism Threat Level to ‘Severe’
Previously, the level was set at “substantial.” The new level means that “a terrorist attack is highly likely, although there is no intelligence to suggest that one is imminent,” said Theresa May, the country’s home secretary.
The United Kingdom has five levels of threat ranging from “low,” where an attack “is unlikely,” to “critical,” meaning “an attack is expected imminently.”
The level is set by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre and the Security Service, known as MI5.
The country plans to introduce new laws said counter the increased threat.
“We face a real and serious threat in the U.K. from international terrorism,” said May. “I would urge the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police.”
