Air Berlin said it will give economy-class passengers the opportunity to purchase upgrades to business class at auction. The system, called airberlin exquisite, is available on select long-haul flights.

Bids for business-class seats can be placed on the airline’s website up to 72 hours before the scheduled departure if available. Successful bidders will be notified at least 12 hours before a flight whether the bid was successful.

Customers who win upgrades via auction will receive all of the same services as those who purchased business-class tickets, including priority checkin and boarding as well as access to business-class airport lounges. Air Berlin’s recently-refurbished business class cabin offers fully lie-flat seats with direct aisle access for every seat, and gourmet meals from Sansibar, a well-known restaurant on the German island of Sylt.

Air Berlin operates non-stop flights between Chicago, Fort Myers, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York, linking both Berlin and Düsseldorf. Air Berlin passengers may also access up to 60 additional U.S. destinations through the airline’s codeshare partner, American Airlines. Both airlines are members of the oneworld alliance.
