WestJet Reports Record Q2 Profit

WestJet Airlines announced financial results for the second quarter of 2014.

The carrier reported a record profit of 51.8 million Canadian dollars ($47.9 million) in the second quarter, a year-over-year increase of 15.9% from C$44.7 million in Q2 of 2013.

Revenue in the second quarter also increased, up 10.3% to C$930.3 million from C$843.7 million in the same period last year.

The airline’s passenger traffic was 4.930 billion revenue passenger miles, or RPMs, a year-over-year increase of 5.5% from 4.675 billion RPMs last year.  Capacity also rose, up by 5.2% year-over-year to 6.193 billion available seat miles, or ASMs, from 5.888 billion ASMs last year.

Meanwhile, passenger load factor for the second quarter was 79.6%, a slight year-over-year increase of 0.2 percentage points from 79.4% in the same period last year.
