DSC_0247The Ukrainian government said on Saturday that it believes Russia is responsible provided the missile that shot down a Malaysian Airlines 777 on Thursday and that separatist rebels were confiscating evidence at the crash site and limiting access to it.

The news dampened the prospects of having a thorough and transparent investigation of the crash of Flight 17.

Media reports from the site indicate little progress in the investigation, in great part thanks to the site’s location in separatist-held territory.  Heavy fighting continues in other parts of eastern Ukraine.

With no one managing the site, the scene is chaotic and, based on live media reports and photographs viewed by Frequent Business Traveler, no one has cordoned off the area.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government said it had proof that the surface-to-air missile used in the attack was provided by Russia, accusing Russia and separatist forces of trying to cover their role by removing evidence as well as missile launchers.

Ukrainian and American officials have said that the separatist rebels who carried out the attack would have needed help from Russia in order to do so.

“We have proof that the terrorist attack was planned and carried out with the involvement of representatives of the Russian Federation,” said Vitaly Nayda, the head of counterintelligence for the Ukrainian State Security Service.  “We know that Russia is trying to hide its terrorist activity and their direct involvement.”
