Southwest Reports Record Q2 Profit
Southwest Airlines announced financial results for the second quarter of 2014. The airline reported a record profit of $465 million for Q2 of the year, more than doubling with a 107.6% year-over-year increase from $224 million in the second quarter of 2013.
The airline’s revenue was $4.752 billion, a year-over-year increase of 8.5% from $4.380 billion in the same period last year. Passenger revenue per available seat mile, or Prasm, increased by 9% year-over-year.
Passenger traffic in the second quarter also increased by 2.4%, up to 28.590 billion revenue passenger miles, or RPMs, from 27.930 billion in the second quarter of 2013. Meanwhile, capacity decreased by 0.4% to 34.096 billion available seat miles, or ASMs, from 34.231 billion last year.
Passenger load factor in the second quarter increased by 2.3 percentage points, up to 83.9% from 81.6% in the same period last year.
