DSC_0250Malaysia’s prime minister said Monday that the two black boxes from the downed Malaysia Airlines 777 will be turned over to Malaysian officials and that the country will take custody of the victims’ bodies as well.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said that his country has held behind-the-scenes discussions with “those in charge of the MH17 crash site” and those led to the announcement.  He emphasized the importance of “recovering the remains of those who lost their lives” in the attack.

The bodies of the victims will be flown to Amsterdam Monday evening for forensic identification and then returned to their families.  The transfer of the flight data recorder and voice recorder will happen in Donetsk, Ukraine, also on Monday.

Dutch forensic teams will work on identifying the victims with the help of experts from Belgium, Germany, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom.
