Hilton Worldwide announced the introduction of digital check-in, room selection, and digital check-out via smartphones, tablets, and laptops. The hotelier plans to add the ability for guests to unlock rooms using a smartphone in the future.

The new system allows guests who are Hilton HHonors members to check in for a hotel stay at 6 a.m. the day before arrival. The system will allow them to choose a room using floor plans and a list of available rooms. It will also provide photos of the rooms to make it easier to choose.

After checking in, a guest at full-service Hilton hotels can purchase an upgrade and also specify other amenities.

Hilton says it expects to have the digital check-in and room selection functionality up and running on the iOS and Android platforms for its Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, Hilton Hotels, Hilton Garden Inn, Homewood Suites, and Home2 Suites brands in the United States by the end of the summer. The new functionality will be available at DoubleTree and Embassy Suites properties in the United States in the fall.

The new tools should be available at over 4,000 hotels across the globe by year-end.

Hotels outside of the United States should support digital check-out by the end of 2016. This feature is currently available in all U.S. properties.
