United Traffic Up in May

United Airlines announced operational results for May 2014.  The airline’s consolidated traffic, capacity, and load factor all increased for the month compared to last year’s numbers.

Total system traffic was 18.163 billion revenue passenger miles, or RPMs, an increase of 1.2% from 17.939 billion in May 2013.  Meanwhile, total capacity increased by 0.2% to 21.296 billion available seat miles, or ASMs, from 21.249 billion last year.

The airline’s total load factor was 85.3%, an increase of 0.9 percentage points from 84.4% in May 2013.

United showed the greatest improvement in international operations, with a 3.1% increase in international revenue passenger miles, and a 2.4% increase in available seat miles.  Meanwhile, domestic RPMs increased by only 0.4%, while domestic ASMs were down by 0.8%.  Mainline RPMs were up 1.7% with a 0.8% increase in mainline ASMs, while the airline’s regional RPMs decreased 1.8%, and regional ASMs decreased by 3.8%.
