Five Tranquil Destinations to Relax and Recharge

The onset of warmer weather in the past few weeks means one thing to most people: summer vacation.  If you haven’t packed your bags yet, here are some recommended summer getaways that promise rest and relaxation in unique settings.

Hoshinoya Karuizawa
Karuizawa, Japan

Many visitors to Japan don’t get past the larger cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto, and by not doing so, they are missing out on a secret Japan, one that doesn’t have tall skyscrapers and electronic devices everywhere one looks.

A trip to the Hoshinoya Karuizawa resort will move you into an alternate present, a 21st century without many of the devices and distractions we take for granted.

The Hoshinoya Karuizawa is very much a traditional ryokan, or Japanese inn, with rooms that have balconies extending over flowing waters, and guests all walking around in yukata, a casual kimono, or samue, the work clothing of Japanese Buddhist monks.

Indulge in stargazing in the hills of Karuizawa, overlooking Mount Asama, or luxuriate in the open-air onsen that takes its water from the Hoshino hot springs.  The time you didn’t have at home for thought and reflection – it’s yours for the taking here.

Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains
St. Moritz, Switzerland

Say the words “St. Moritz” and people think après ski.  But the city had its origins as a cool getaway for the hot summer months (expect a high temperature of 60° F or 15.6° C in July), and the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains, nestled in the Swiss Alps, is the premier address for relaxation.

No matter what your interests, you’ll find it in St. Moritz in the summer.  Sportscars St. Moritz roars in late June: expect to see motorcades of DeTomasos, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Maseratis at horsepower-filled events.  For opera lovers, the 15th Opera Festival St Moritz will start with the Swiss première of Rossini’s La Gazetta.  Festival da Jazz attracts music lovers from mid July to mid August, and equine fans will love the 19 Sommer Concours Hippique in early August. Finally, Engadinwind, a spectacular windsurfing and kitesurfing regatta, takes place in mid August and should not be missed.
