Employees of South American carrier LAN Airlines announced said that they will begin their planned strike later this week.  The airline’s aviation mechanics in Peru will go on strike on June 26 and 27, while LAN flight attendants in Argentina will also begin their strike this week.

The strikes were first announced earlier this month.

Unions representing these workers are seeking salary raises for LAN Peru aircraft mechanics, as well as a collective bargaining agreement to protect the jobs of LAN flight attendants in Argentina.  The unions are part of the International Transport Workers’ Federation Network of LATAM Unions, which represents LAN and TAM Airlines workers in several South American countries.

With the 2014 World Cup currently taking place in Brazil, the strike has the potential to affect a large number of passengers in the coming days.
