United Sees Decrease in April Capacity

United Airlines announced operational results for April 2014. The airline’s consolidated traffic and load factor both increased in April, while its capacity decreased.

Total system traffic for the month was 16.619 billion revenue passenger miles, or RPMs, an increase of 0.6% from 16.521 billion in April 2013. Meanwhile, total capacity decreased by 1.3%, to 19.957 billion ASMs, or available seat miles, from 20.212 billion last year.

The airline’s total load factor was 83.3%, an increase of 1.6 percentage points from 81.7% in April 2013.

International operations improved in the first quarter, while domestic operations declined. International revenue passenger miles increased by 1.4%, with a 0.2% increase in available seat miles, while the airline’s domestic RPMs decreased by 0.2% with a 2.3% decrease in ASMs. Mainline RPMs increased by 0.6% with a 1.1% decrease in ASMs, while regional RPMs increased by 0.4% with a 2.5% decrease in regional ASMs.
