EU to Launch Clean Sky 2 Project to Reduce Environmental Impact of Aviation
Airbus to Be A Major Contributor To Initiative
The Council of the European Union announced Clean Sky 2, an expansion of the Clean Sky Joint Technology Initiative. The program is the largest European aeronautics research program to date, and its principal aim is to significantly reduce CO2 and NOx pollution as well as noise emissions.
Clean Sky 1, a joint collaboration between the private and public sectors, was launched in 2008 and was set to expire in 2017. Clean Sky 2 will start this July and run until 2023, and will build on the most promising technologies developed through its predecessor.
The European Union will invest €1.75 billion for the project, while participants will contribute approximately €2.2 billion with a total budget of close to €4 billion.
The French aircraft manufacturer Airbus is one of the leading contributors to Clear Sky 2, providing its nearly half a century of aeronautics engineering expertise to build cleaner, more environmentally sustainable aircraft. Airbus will focus on new propulsion systems and integration into future aircraft, new fuselage and passenger cabin designs, and the “cockpit of the future”, according to a statement from the company.
Airbus said it hopes to “reinforce Europe’s industrial leadership and future competiveness” through its participation and “enhance the sustainability and efficiency of commercial aviation, as well as improve the journey experience for the passenger.”
Airbus will focus on three key platforms: advanced engine and aircraft configurations, innovative physical integration cabin system structure, and next generation electrical aircraft system, cockpit, and avionics.
The aircraft manufacturer will be working with Saab on the Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft project, a part of Clean Sky 2 focused on developing a smart wing concept, including testing a Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator on an A340 aircraft. Another CS2 project aims to produce a full-scale ground engine demonstrator of the Counter-Rotating-Open-Rotor concept.
