Hawaii Island Air announced that it placed an order for two Bombardier Q400 NextGen aircraft. The order is valued at $60.9 million, and includes options for four additional Q400 NextGen planes.

The Q400 NextGen is the latest model in Bombardier’s line of Q400 aircraft, which first entered service in 2000. The NextGen is designed mainly for short-haul operations, and uses twin new-technology turboprop engines that aim to increase both air speed and fuel efficiency and reduce operating costs for airlines.

To date, Bombardier has received a total of 495 orders for Q400 and Q400 NextGen aircraft.  Hawaii Island Air’s Q400 NextGens will be outfitted with 71 seats, although the aircraft is capable of seating 86.

Hawaii Island Air was founded in 1980 and provides regional service to four destinations within the state of Hawaii. The airline currently operates a fleet of five ATR 72-212 aircraft, which it plans to replace with the Q400 planes.
