American Airlines Flagship Lounge Los Angeles International Airport – Review

My first visit to American Airlines’ Flagship Lounge at LAX was the morning after American’s inaugural flights of its new Airbus A321T transcon subfleet aircraft.  I had flown out on the inaugural flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and my second flight on the brand new plane was to come roughly 12 hours after the first.

My visit to the Flagship Lounge started with Flagship Check-in.   American offers Flagship Check-in at five major airports across the globe and the experience is different at each airport.  At London’s Heathrow, American has a dedicated facility in front of Terminal 3 and in Los Angeles there is a separate entrance curbside.

Flagship Check-in is for first-class passengers on international or three-class transcon flights.  It is also available to ConciergeKey members and AAdvantage Executive Platinum and oneworld Emerald customers and also to those who purchase American’s Five Star Service for a particular flight.


The taxi dropped me off at the Flagship Check-in entrance at 5:45 a.m.  The door looked unlike any that one would expect at an airport, and resembled that of a private club.  It was watched over by a friendly doorman attired in a red waistcoat and a woman who was checking off names in a manner evocative of the admission protocol at an exclusive club (the only thing missing was the velvet rope).

The check-in area was relatively small, and due perhaps to the early morning hour, a single agent was on duty.  I was the only passenger there at the time and little was said.

The agent issued me a boarding pass, and the doorman provided escort to a private elevator that transported us to the security checkpoint. He then opened a real rope and I found myself at the very front of the Pre-Check line.
