Air China announced Tuesday it will begin a trial of Ku-band satellite-based Internet services on one of its 777-200 aircraft later this year.

The onboard Wi-Fi service will support high-speed access for personal electronic devices including smartphones, tablets, and laptops and will also offer passengers a selection of stored content via Wi-Fi.

The trial marks the first time Air China will utilize Ku-band connectivity, which offers faster connectivity than air-to-ground systems.

The service will be provided by Global Eagle Entertainment, which will also supply training and aeronautical certification.
