Fraport AG, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, reported a 0.9% increase in passenger traffic and a record 58 million passengers for 2013 despite what it termed a “difficult situation” for European aviation.

The number of aircraft movements for 2013 was down by 2% to 472,692 takeoffs and landings compared to last year’s figures, which were down 1%.  Fraport said that this was due to higher load factors and the use of larger aircraft.  Despite the decline, the number of takeoffs and landings in December, 34,769, was up 1% year-over-year.

Frankfurt Airport reported a 1.3% increase in cargo tonnage for 2013, with 2.1 million metric tons of cargo passing through the airport.  This compares with a decline of 6.7% in 2012.

Passenger traffic at Germany’s largest airport should grow as much as 3% in 2014, according to a statement by Fraport chairman Stefan Schulte.  “We are beginning to see early indications of more satisfying growth for 2014,” he said.
