IN-FLIGHT SERVICE

DSC_0498Prior to departure, I was offered a beverage.  One of the things I noticed about the pre-departure beverage was that it didn’t include just the standard orange juice, Champagne, or water selection; rather, it was an open-ended offer.  My choice of apple juice was quickly delivered to me.

Our departure was a bit delayed due to some minor mechanical issues and we pushed back 20 minutes later than scheduled.  Our takeoff time nonetheless was one minute earlier than planned.

Once aloft, the two crew members in the first-class cabin sprung into action.   First up was a drink and warm nuts served in a ramekin.  Refills for both the drinks and nuts were offered several times.  I stuck with my apple juice for this round.

In the meantime, I had logged into the Gogo in-flight Internet system and was pleased to find that it was operating at slightly faster than normal speeds.  DSC_0499Since it was a Saturday, I was online more to bide the time by chatting with friends and reading news than doing work but I was able to address some correspondence and even edit and publish a news story while on board.

While passengers were enjoying drinks, the crew took preferences for lunch.  The choices were a chicken sandwich or the highly-recommended beef salad platter, which I chose.  The platter came with sliced beef, noodles, lettuce, and a ginger dressing and was quite good.

We weren’t done yet, however.

The smell of freshly baked cookies was wafting through the cabin and soon the two flight attendants were in the aisles with them.  Someone somewhere at some airline must have discovered that freshly baked cookies, a choice of oatmeal cranberry or chocolate chip in this case, are impossible to refuse so of course I had to have one.  I did, however, show great restraint in turning down a second one, despite the fact that they were very good.

ARRIVAL

DSC_0533Despite the late pushback, we arrived at LaGuardia nine minutes early.  There was no wait for a gate and I was one of the first off the aircraft.  With no checked luggage (as usual), I was meeting a colleague who was picking me up within ten minutes of arrival.

BOTTOM LINE

Chicago-New York is one of the most competitive routes in the world and many passengers fly it several times a month.  While other flights of this duration might offer a small snack, American offers a tasty meal to remain competitive.  Given the excellent service, the comfortable product, and the availability of Internet access, there’s no doubt that frequent business travelers wishing to relax after meetings or to get some work done and communicate with colleagues on the ground will be highly satisfied.
