Appropriate for the Grand Kempinski, the sole dining venue at the hotel Foto 13is the Grand Restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

While the Grand Restaurant may indeed be grand, it’s still reasonably casual and jacket and tie are not required.  The wait staff is multilingual (including Slovak, German, and English) and is happy to make recommendations.

Two of the most enjoyable dishes I tried were the “paper-thin” black chicken, served with apricot, Cointreau, and mushrooms, and the gnocchi, which I had as a half-portion appetizer the first evening and ordered as an entrée on the second night.

For dessert, there’s only one choice: the bosphorale, a chocolate cake served with dried apricots that were rehydrated with tea and orange.  Created by William McCarrick, executive pastry chef and master chocolatier at the Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, this dessert was named the Kempinski Dessert of the Year and is served in other Kempinski hotel dining Foto 10rooms as well.

Breakfast, served from 7 to 11 a.m., was a treat.  The buffet features a large variety of Slovakian cheeses, cold cuts and sausages, yoghurt, a selection of fresh fruit, and excellent breads, rolls, and pastries, as well as cereals and Müesli.  The staff is ready to cook a variety of egg dishes as well.  Freshly made carrot juice was prepared at my request the first day and offered to me the second day without my having to ask.

While it took a few days to get here from New York (I could have flown to a closer airport had I not wanted to stop in Munich first) I would gladly make the journey again.  The combination of an extraordinarily high level of service and attention to detail, combined with the peaceful location and fresh mountain air, made for an extraordinary stay, which by all accounts was not long enough.  A month later, I found myself on the other side of the High Tatras Mountains in Poland, and truly pined for what I knew awaited guests in Štrbské pleso.
