The Charles Hotel, Munich, Germany – Review

A very large wooden writing desk stood at the ready, with easily accessible electrical outlets. DSC_2058 Internet was fast and complimentary.  The wicker and metal chair was not ergonomic and not terribly comfortable, however.  I found myself sitting on the sofa to work and was gratified to discover that it was a rather comfortable work environment.

The Charles offers a variety of elegant meeting rooms, suitable for anything from a small board meeting to an evening reception or banquet.

The hotel’s well-equipped gym is open from 6:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.  It hosts a swimming pool, steam room, and sauna, plus five spa treatment rooms with a variety of services are available.  Munich is also a great city for walking and I strolled through the Old Botanical Garden and walked around the city for several hours as part of my workout.

Davvero, the hotel’s Italian restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  It is as good as I remembered it from my last stay but with a twist: once a month the restaurant holds an Italian market, with an amazing array of Italian specialties cooked in a temporary open kitchen at one end of the restaurant.DSC_3284  (Make sure to see the virtual tour of the dinner on the last page of this article.)

I was lucky enough to be there at the right time and spent an evening listening to live music (in Italian, of course), watching a chef prepare a variety of pasta specialties, and seeing more types of ham being sliced and served than I had ever dreamt would be possible.

Breakfast was a satisfying experience as well, with an extensive selection at the buffet including fresh-baked German breads, cold cuts, cheeses, cakes and pastries, fruit, and fresh Bircher müesli, as well as a variety of warm dishes prepared upon request.

On warmer days, the terrace, directly across from the Old Botanical Garden, is open as well and the opportunity to dine al fresco in most pleasant surroundings should not be missed.

Immediately past the lobby one finds the Bar, with cozy red banquettes, dark wood, and a friendly bartender.  It gets quite busy in the evenings and is a great place to unwind with friends.

A second visit to a hotel where I enjoyed my first stay is something I always approach with trepidation.  Will my fond memories remain intact, such as the superior concierge service experienced previously, or will something be amiss?  I needn’t have worried: my second stay was simply better than my first.
