Microsoft announced it will release two new Surface tablet models, Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, as well as an expanded portfolio of new Surface accessories in October.  Each new model includes significant updates, such as improved processing power and battery life, and new services and add-ons, including free Skype Wi-Fi.

The Surface 2 has a 10.6” screen, and its full-size USB port has been upgraded to  USB 3.0, a technology that allows for up to four times faster file transfers.  The product also has an upgraded camera resolution, with a 3.5 megapixel front camera and a 5 megapixel rear camera.

The new model will ship with Windows RT 8.1, and is pre-loaded with Microsoft Office 2013 RT.  The Surface 2 is thinner and lighter than its predecessor, and is available in 32 GB and 64 GB configurations.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 2 is able to transform from a tablet into a laptop, and is powered by a fourth-generation Intel Core i5 processor.  The processor delivers an increased performance and up to 60% longer battery life than the model’s predecessor, the Surface Pro.

Microsoft also announced seven new accessories to the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 that will enhance the models’ overall performance and productivity.  Among them are the new Touch Cover 2, which features backlit keys, and the Type Cover 2, which will also be backlit and will be available in cyan, magenta, purple, and black.

In addition, a docking station will allow customers to connect Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 to desktop PCs in a single step.  An arc touch mouse surface edition will be available with the new models.

The products will initially be available in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland beginning October 22, and in China beginning in early November.
