Apple announced two new iPhone models, the iPhone 5s and c, as well as a release date for its newest mobile operating system, iOS 7, on Tuesday.

The iPhone 5s features an A7 processor, and is the first phone to bring 64-bit kernel architecture to the mobile market.  In addition, the 5s contains an M7 motion coprocessor, which gathers data from the system’s motion sensors, freeing the A7 from power-intensive tasks.

The iPhone 5s’s camera has a larger aperture, True Tone flash (which more accurately captures the original color), burst mode shooting, slo-mo video, sapphire protection, and a more sensitive sensor for better low-light photography performance.  Built into the home button is a fingerprint scanner, called Touch ID, to easily secure and unlock the phone.  Users can also use this method to authenticate purchases on the app store.

The new iPhone will be available for purchase online and in-store ordering September 20 in three colors, silver, space gray, and gold, and will cost $199, $299, and $399 for 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB respectively.  The same models can be purchased off contract for $649, $749, and $849.

The iPhone 5c lacks many of the features the 5s boasts, but comes in a greater range of colors for a reduced price.  The 5c has an A6 processor, the same camera as the 5s minus the True Tone flash, slo-mo video shooting, and burst mode, but lacks the M7 processor and Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

The 5c will be available for purchase on September 13 in five colors, white, pink, yellow, blue, and green, and will cost $99 for 16GB and $199 for 32GB.  A 64GB option will not be offered.  Unsubsidized, the 5c will cost $549 and $649 for the same models.

The 5s measures 4.87“ (123.8 mm) tall, 2.31“ (58.6 mm) wide, and .3“ (7.6 mm) deep, weighing 3.95 ounces (112 grams).  The 5c is 4.9“ (124.4 mm) tall, 2.33“ (59.2 mm) wide, and .35“ (8.97 mm) deep, and weighs 4.65 ounces (132 grams).

Both iPhones will ship with iOS 7 and support LTE at speeds up to 100mbps.

Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 7 introduces a redesigned interface and a slew of new features.  It will be available as a free download for compatible devices starting September 18.
