For meetings, the hotel provides six rooms (several of which can be joined together) DSC_2422with mountain views in most. The outdoor Mountain Gallery can accommodate up to 1,200 people for what are sure to be unique and memorable events.  The ballroom is able to accommodate 200 people for a reception and 180 when the room is set up for a banquet.

WELLNESS

If you are searching for a place of silence and recreation, the Mountain Spa is the perfect place. The 15,070 square-foot (1,400-square-meter) Spa consists of four areas: the treatment area, the sauna area, a pool area (with indoor and outdoor pools), and a fitness center. In addition to standard treatment rooms, the Spa offers a 484 square-foot (45-square-meter) treatment room for couples with private bath.

Outdoor activities organized by the hotel or planned on an individual basis include walking and biking tours in the mountains, golf and tennis in the summer months, and cross country skiing, downhill skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

DINING

DSC_2452Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in the hotel’s main restaurant, the 3’60° Restaurant and Grill. It truly lives up to its name and offers its guests a panoramic view from nearly every table in the restaurant. Warm dishes for breakfast are prepared by the restaurant’s chefs in an open kitchen. The generously-sized breakfast buffet offers a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, bread, cold cuts, sausages, cheeses, and fruit juices.

The hotel’s gourmet restaurant, Le Ciel, serves dinner in a more intimate environment. Please see our separate review for more details.

LEISURE

Close to the hotel as well as in the surrounding area of Berchtesgaden, travelers can find numerous activity opportunities. DSC_2372The hotel itself offers special seasonal events as well as monthly recurring events, such as walks through Le Ciel chef’ Ulrich Heimann’s herb garden.

Not far from the hotel are the former Berghof, the Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle’s Nest), and a documentation center where guests can learn more about the Obersalzberg area’s history and the period from 1933 to 1945. Visitors are able to access the Documentation Center Obersalzberg, which offers an insider’s view with unpublished photos and documents.

Other attractions include the breathtaking Königssee, a lake framed by two mountains just south of Berchtesgaden. For a day trip to the hometown of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, visitors need only drive 30 minutes to Salzburg.

BOTTOM LINE

Earlier reviews of the property by Jonathan Spira set my expectations for the InterContinental to a high level. Thanks to a perfect combination of architecture, location, a wonderful mountain view, and numerous recreational activities in the hotel as well as in the Berchtesgaden area, I had a wonderful stay at the InterContinental Resort Berchtesgaden. I am also now able to understand why the hotel has become our first destination after taking delivery of a new car in Munich.  To echo a sentiment expressed in our last review of the resort, I can’t wait until my next stay.
