VW Debuts Car-Net Telematics and Automatic Crash Notification System
Volkswagen of America announced that it will begin to offer select 2014 vehicles with VW Car-Net, a telematics system. VW Car-Net will provide drivers with a variety of safety and convenience features including automatic crash notification (ACN).
The new offering is Volkswagen’s first telematics product in the U.S. and it will be available on certain trim levels of the Beetle, Beetle Convertible, CC, Eos, Jetta, Passat, and Tiguan models.
Volkswagen includes a six-month trial of Car-Net on vehicles with the system installed. A subscription costs $199 for one year with discounts for multiple years. A month-to-month option is available for $17.99.
Safety features that come packaged with Car-Net include automatic collision notification, which will transmit information about the vehicle and its location to the Car-Net service center following airbag deployment or a rollover to facilitate any emergency services required; roadside assistance; and remote vehicle status, which allows the owner to check the status of the car’s doors and lights among other things from a mobile app or the Car-Net web portal.
Other functionality includes last parked location, which displays the car’s location on a map; stolen vehicle assistance to locate the car in the event of theft; and service appointment scheduling.
A key feature included with all Car-Net subscriptions is agent destination assist, which allows an agent at the Car-Net call center to send a destination directly to the vehicle’s navigation system (for those vehicles equipped with navi). Drivers can also send a destination through the web portal or mobile app.
The Car-Net mobile app is available for the Apple iPhone; an Android version is planned.
