South African Airways and Etihad Airways announced that the two airlines have entered into a codeshare agreement.  The two signed a Memorandum of Understanding covering the agreement as well as plans to explore possible synergies and other opportunities.

Under the agreement, South African Airways is placing its code on 12 Etihad Airways destinations from Abu Dhabi.   Additional cities in Asia and the Middle East will be added, as soon as regulatory approval can be secured.

In addition, Etihad Airways is placing its code on South African Airways flights to 10 destinations across African and South America from the latter’s hub in Johannesburg.  The destinations include Cape Town, Durban, East London and Port Elizabeth, in South Africa, Livingston, Lusaka, Ndola, Harare, and Victoria Falls in Africa, and São Paulo in South America.

Beyond the codeshares, South African Airways and Etihad Airways said they will look at working in areas that include procurement, ground handling, and training.
