Momondo Introduces Flight Insight
Travel search engine momondo announced the introduction of its Flight Insight feature in the U.S.
Flight Insight aggregates data from thousands of fare searches to provide individual users with a unique analysis that will help them figure out the most advantageous pricing and timing for a flight. The analysis presents six factors, namely days to departure, time of day, day of week, seasonality, airport, and airline.
Simply put, it shows the user how to figure out the least expensive day of the week as well as the least expensive time of year to fly that route in addition to the least expensive time of day to depart, the least expensive airline flying the route, and so on.
The Flight Insight system currently works on 400 specific routes, although momondo is adding more on a regular basis. A search for flights from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to London Heathrow in late May revealed that Wednesday is the cheapest day by far to fly on and morning flights are cheaper than others. It’s cheaper to purchase a ticket on this route for the specific dates in May 47 days in advance (and it’s more expensive to purchase it 23 days out).
The system is navigated via a pie chart-like interface, and it provides overviews of the most and least expensive examples for each factor for each particular route. The system also produces a graph that displays how all the different factors impact the flight price.
The feature uses data from various real prices found by users in previous searches on momondo. As more fares are collected in the future, the insights for each route will adapt to changes in each market.
