DSC_0479Etihad Airways and Air Canada announced plans for a codeshare agreement.  The two airlines will offer through-checked bag and frequent flyer benefits once the agreement goes into effect, which should be in the third quarter of 2013.

Under the terms of the agreement, Etihad Airways will be allowed to place its code on Air Canada flights between Toronto and various cities in North America.  In addition, Air Canada will be able to place its code on nonstop Etihad Airways flights between Toronto and Abu Dhabi, as well as on flights between Abu Dhabi and London Heathrow.

Members of each airline’s frequent flyer programs will be able to earn and redeem miles on the codeshare flights.  The carriers will also be working to improve freight services to and from both Toronto and Abu Dhabi.

Etihad Airways recently purchased a 24% stake in Jet Airways, India’s second largest airline.  Etihad and Jet Airways’ combined network serves over 14 destinations.
