TAM Airlines, which merged with LAN Airlines in 2012, will leave the Star Alliance and join oneworld, becoming a full member in 2014.

TAM’s Chilean partner LAN is already a oneworld member.   TAM will become a full oneworld member in the second quarter of 2014 but will remain in Star Alliance until then.  LAN Colombia will also join oneworld as an affiliate member by the end of 2013.

Oneworld membership is growing.  Malaysia Airlines became a member earlier this year and Qatar Airways, currently a member elect, is expected to become full member either at the end of 2013 or in early 2014.  SriLankan Airlines is also a member elect.

“We evaluated all the existing possibilities and chose the alliance that offers the best benefits to our passengers, in addition to the best connectivity and products, as well as the greater synergies for LATAM Airlines Group, said Enrique Cueto, LATAM’s CEO.
