Chinese authorities have announced a 72-hour visa-free visa policy for travelers from 45 different countries who wish to transit through Beijing Capital International Airport. The policy, which goes into effect beginning January 1, 2013, applies to air passengers traveling through the city who have outbound tickets and visas to a third country.

The new policy will apply to citizens of 45 countries, including those from Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, and the United States. Travelers will not have to apply for a visa.

Passengers will be able to briefly tour Beijing while awaiting their departures.  The policy is expected to increase the number of in-transit passengers in Beijing.
