2012 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid Platinum Edition – Road Test and Review

Since its initial introduction in 1999, the Cadillac Escalade has been redesigned twice, and each time it has separated itself more from its less costly cousins, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Now in its third generation, the Escalade is available in two wheelbases, two- and four-wheel drive, and with a choice of powertrains, one of which is the hybrid that tested.

Discerning the difference between the hybrid and gasoline-powered Escalade is next to impossible, with the two green hybrid badges and the occasional hum of the electric motor in place of the  V8 being the only indications. Our test vehicle was a top-of-the-line Platinum Edition model, in eye-popping Crystal Red. The Platinum Edition’s LED headlamps are arranged in a vertical line of 5 projectors, and with the amount of chrome on the car’s front end and its height, it almost resembled a locomotive.


As I approached the Escalade, it was emitting a faint electric whine, since I had used the remote starter to cool off the cabin from the hot, late summer Georgian afternoon. After opening the door, the running board descended to facilitate entrance into the car. The luxurious Cocoa brown leather provided a warm welcome and the air-conditioned and heated seats gave me a commanding driving position that towered over surrounding traffic. Since the car was already running via remote start and I had not driven a car with a mechanical key in several years, it took a few moments to realize that the key should be inserted into the ignition lock.
