To combat the increased threat of malware and the vulnerability of data on smartphones, Verizon Wireless has launched a new mobile security app for Android. Verizon Mobile Security offers protection by leveraging McAfee antivirus functionality, and is available from the Google Play app marketplace.

The app comes in three versions, with varying price points and protection levels. Verizon Mobile Security Basic is free and features antivirus and malware protection, as well as protection against suspicious websites. Verizon Mobile Security Premium adds McAfee App Alert to provide information about which apps on the device have the ability to access, store, and transmit data. That upgrade costs $1.99/month per line. The highest level of security available is Verizon Mobile Security Premium with Total Equipment Coverage, which adds coverage protection for lost, stolen, and damaged devices, as well as an extended warranty for device defects. The service is the $1.99/month per line for the premium plan, with device protection adding an additional $1/month per line.

In a recent report, McAfee named the Android platform as the top target for new mobile malware attacks. According to the security software company, threats include malware that sends SMS messages, mobile botnets, spyware, and Trojans.
