United Launches TSA’s PreCheck Program at Newark Airport
United Airlines announced the launch of the TSA’s PreCheck program at Newark Liberty International Airport’s C3 Checkpoint. TSA PreCheck is a risk-based pre-screening initiative, in which travelers are able to volunteer information about themselves that may make them eligible for an expedited screening experience. Those who qualify for the program are allowed to leave their shoes, light outerwear, and belts on, as well as keep their laptops and liquids and gels inside their carry-ons.
The TSA manages and operates PreCheck, and is working with United, U.S. Customs, and Border Protection to identify potential participants. Eligible MileagePlus members are being invited to take part in the initial phase, and non-members may qualify by becoming eligible members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Trusted Traveler programs. Prior to each flight, the TSA will determine eligibility for expedited screening for customers who choose to participate, and will embed the information in the barcode of their boarding passes. Eligible customers will be directed to the assigned pre-screening lane after TSA agents scan their boarding passes. However, no customers are guaranteed expedited screening, as the TSA will continue to incorporate security measures and checks on randomly selected passengers.
In addition to Newark, TSA’s PreCheck will be launching at the main terminal of Dulles International Airport later this month. Along with the two new destinations, participating MileagePlus members may be eligible for expedited security screening at Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare, Cincinnati, Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Reagan Washington National, Seattle, and Portland, Oregon. Customers of American, Delta, and US Airways are also eligible for PreCheck at Newark. More information on TSA PreCheck can be found at tsa.gov, or united.com/tsaprescreening.
