Air India became the fifth airline in the world and first in India to put the Boeing 787 Dreamliner into service as the airline took delivery of the first of its ordered aircraft in South Carolina.

The 787 will service long haul routes throughout the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Air India’s Dreamliner has 18 business-class seats and 238 economy-class seats. The Everett, Washington assembled aircraft will depart Boeing’s North Charleston, South Carolina assembly facility on Friday for Delhi.

Two more Dreamliners will be delivered to Air India in the coming weeks before they are flown on domestic routes during an introductory period. The Indian flag carrier has ordered 27 Dreamliners, which they plan to take delivery of by the end of 2016.

Air India’s Dreamliner will join those of ANA, Japan Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and United Airlines, with several airlines slated to take delivery of the aircraft by the end of 2012. Air India is based in Mumbai.
