United Airlines announced the first international routes for its soon-to-arrive Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.  United will now offer nonstop 787 service between its Houston hub and Lagos, Nigeria, five days a week, beginning on January 7, 2013.  Daily nonstop 787 service will also be offered between United’s Los Angeles hub and Tokyo Narita, beginning on January 3, 2013, and Los Angeles and Shanghai, beginning on March 30, 2013.  These routes are in addition to United’s previously announced service between its Denver hub and Tokyo Narita, set to begin March 31, 2013.

United has not yet announced its domestic routes for the Dreamliner but domestic service will precede the start of international service.

Beginning December 4, 2012, and February 4, 2013, United will temporarily offer daily nonstop 787 service from Houston to both Amsterdam and London Heathrow.  Tickets for service from Denver to Narita can be purchased now; for the other routes, tickets will become available for purchase on August 25.

Although the airline will only get a handful of Dreamliners in the coming year, the 787 will eventually comprise a large part of its fleet.  “With 50 787s on order, we look forward to the many new route opportunities that will become available to United and our customers in the future,” said Greg Hart, United’s senior vice president responsible for its route network.

United’s first Dreamliner completed its inaugural production flight earlier in the week.
