Ethiopian Airlines Receives New Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Ethiopian Airlines took delivery of its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner earlier this week. The Boeing 787 is one of the world’s most technologically advanced aircraft, with numerous system, engine and aerodynamic advancements, and is constructed entirely of light-weight composites.
The 787 is the first mid-sized airplane capable of flying long-range routes, resulting in the ability for airlines to open new routes, including non-stop flights. “We have been waiting for this airplane and now that we officially have it and will show it to the world, I can say with pride, it was worth the wait,” said Tewolde GebreMariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.
Ethiopian Airlines is the first carrier in Africa to operate the new aircraft, and will fly the Dreamliner to Washington, D.C., where it will be on display for the media and VIP guests. The aircraft will then make its maiden trip to Africa, with its first revenue producing flight departing from Dulles International Airport and arriving at Bole Addis Ababa International airport, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Ethiopian Airlines has nine additional 787 Dreamliners on order. Ethiopian was the first African airline to operate the 777-200LR, the first to order the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and the first to order the 777 Freighter. The airline operates an all-Boeing fleet of 737, 757, 767, 777, and now 787 airplanes.
