Virgin America has announced it will update its Elevate frequent flyer program to include new status levels and rewards.

Virgin American is adding Elevate Gold and Elevate Silver status levels which offer perks such as priority check-in, free checked bags, and complimentary upgrades. The enhancements will be added on August 8, the carrier’s fifth anniversary.

Members who earn 50,000 Elevate status points in a year will reach Gold status, while those who earn 20,000 will achieve Silver. Members who have already qualified will reach the appropriate status today, with the benefits available August 8, 2012 through August 8, 2013.

New perks include an expanded advanced purchase upgrade window to Virgin’s eight-seat first class, and special seating in the main cabin. Virgin will reserve seats in rows five, six, and nine (on Airbus A319s), and five, six, seven, and nine (on A320s) for Elevate Gold and Silver members to book. The seats will also be available to Elevate Red and standard customers for $20, or for anyone for free if they go unsold 24 hours before the flight.

The Elevate enhancements also include digital and social media rewards. Virgin will reward members with double points for “checking in” with the Topguest app at its terminals and gates, and will allow members to earn 3,500 points for referring friends to Elevate on their social networks.

To celebrate the new Elevate program, Virgin America is rewarding the member who earns the most points between August 8, 2013 and August 7, 2013 with a sub-orbital flight on Virgin Galactic.
