ROAD WARRIOR SUPPORT

Upstairs, the large writing desk was topped with an iPod docking station and a lamp with multiple outlets. It was paired with a non-ergonomic desk chair, which was nonetheless comfortable, deep, and wheeled, and which I appreciated for the over-the-top faux-fur updating its leather and wood 1930s design. The bedside Mid-Century Modern lamp was another warm and whimsical retro touch.

On the ground floor, however, it was a different story. Outlets were not close enough to the sofa to make working from it practical, and Wi-Fi and mobile phone reception were spotty. (I had to open the front door and stand either outside, or in the doorway to make calls.) I had no problems with either mobile phone or Wi-Fi reception upstairs.

The Graylyn’s wide variety of indoor and outdoor meeting and event space is abundant, and suitable for everything from large conferences to small meetings, and from weddings to galas.

The property has both outdoor and indoor pools, but neither was open for swimming during my stay in early May. This was a bit of a disappointment, as I imagine it would be for other business travelers who like to unwind with a swim.

DINING

So that I could work comfortably during dinner, I ordered room service: a peppery Cabernet Sauvignon, and salmon with asparagus and tomato on risotto. Courteous staff brought it promptly: the wine was stellar, and the entrée was fresh and delicious.

The Graylyn also serves casual fare in the Grille Room, and complimentary daily buffet breakfast, and four-course gourmet dinner in several Manor House dining rooms that are decorated with antiques and artifacts from around the globe.

BOTTOM LINE

Graylyn International Conference Center seems like a well-kept secret for business and leisure travelers, and conference and event planners, tucked away in a quiet section of Winston-Salem. It offers a peaceful, and somewhat academic atmosphere, without feeling stuffy.

Minor complaints aside, I felt extremely relaxed during my stay at the Mews, as it offers elements of escape, productivity, and pampering, all while evoking a bit of Europe in a comfortable, modern environment.
