Delta, the second largest airline in the U.S., has invested $65 million into Grupo Aeromexico. This solidifies the largest airline alliance in the Mexico-U.S. market.

The investment is the first time a global airline has bought into a Mexican national carrier. As part of the investment, Delta now has a seat on the Grupo Aeromexico board of directors.

Delta’s investment follows the creation of an alliance between the two airlines in Latin America last year. The two airlines currently codeshare on 93 destinations, and plan to expand the program.

In addition to the alliance, the two airlines are making a joint investment in a maintenance facility scheduled to open in Mexico in 2013.

Grupo Aeromexico is the holding company of Aeromexico, Mexico’s flag carrier.
