IN-FLIGHT SERVICE

Once we were aloft, flight attendants took meal orders and served drinks accompanied by warm nuts.  Since the departure time meant we’d be flying at prime sleep time, I asked the purser prior to departure if she could prepare a dinner tray for me so I could eat a small appetizer and my entrée all at once and then get maximum shuteye.

As soon as everyone else was getting appetizers, my tray appeared and it had gravlax with asian pear slaw, tomato and basil soup, and my main course of braised beef short ribs with a red wine sauce accompanied by parsnip purée and five baby spice carrots.

The other choices included pan-seared cod with risotto, strozzapreti pasta with eggplant and cherry tomato sauce, and a chilled deli plate including lobster salad and herb roasted chicken.

I had selected the Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc from Stellenbosch South Africa 2010 when drinks were being served and stayed with it for dinner.  It had some nice fragrant notes and a pleasant finish with a little minerality.

I skipped dessert (choice of a cheese platter or vanilla ice cream sundae) and went right to sleep – or at least I tried to.

All in all, I probably got two hours of sleep at best and I was up when breakfast was being served.

Breakfast included a choice of granola cereal or vanilla French toast with scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese and sausage accompanied by fresh fruit.  I had the French toast which was surprisingly good.

ARRIVAL

While we left the gate on time,  thanks to the typical JFK traffic jam for flights at that hour, we waited almost half an hour to take off.  We arrived on time in Stockholm and I was one of the first to disembark.

There was little to no wait at passport control and I was on my way to my connecting flight in minutes.

BOTTOM LINE

Although I am a regular passenger on Delta and its joint-venture partners Air France and KLM, this was my first trans-Atlantic flight ever on Delta metal and I am pleased to report that I had a very very good experience.  The crew was friendly, the food was quite good, the service was excellent, and the flight arrived on time.  The one missing piece of the puzzle was the older seat – and Delta will be outfitting all of its transoceanic aircraft with true lie-flat seats over the course of the coming year
