Virtual Museum of Email and Digital Communications to Open
The Museum of Email and Digital Communications will open on March 27, 2012. The new virtual museum showcases an initial archive of 2,500 reports, conferences, and bulletins that provide the visitor with a history of computer-based communications such as e-mail, social media, instant messaging, texting, and videoconferencing.
“We have a wonderful opportunity to record and interpret the development [of electronic communications technologies], in a way that wasn’t done with other equally momentous developments in human communications, such as the spoken word, the book, the postal system, and the telephone,” said David Ferris, executive curator of the museum.
Visitors to the virtual museum are invited to contribute content via a wiki-style open managment platform on the Web. The museum is a not-for-profit charity, 501(c)(3) registration is pending.
