Tumi Alpha Garment Carrier – Review

I’ve never been a big fan of garment bags. I’ve wanted to like them. I’ve tried several different bags over the years but was never satisfied. I see myself more of a traditional packer. Everything neatly folded and placed in luggage.

Recently, I was preparing to embark on a 14-day cruise. It was going to require air travel and had more clothes to take along than usual. I decided that, rather then go with a bigger rolling bag, I would search for an additional smaller bag. Once again, I was back to looking for the perfect garment bag.

I think I found it with the Tumi Alpha Garment Carrier (style  no. 22136). This is somewhat of a hybrid garment bag. It isn’t a large bag, nor does it have a main compartment only for hanging garments. It is a tri-fold garment bag that easily accommodates two suits. When closed, thanks to the zippered pocket on the back, it fits conveniently over my rolling bag’s handle for easy transport and it also has numerous compartments for smaller accessories. The bag uses an attachable hook for hanging it either open or closed in a closet, and also has a padded shoulder strap.

For the business traveler going on a two- or three-day trip, this bag could easily hold two suits as well as shirts and toiletries. In fact, the bag uses previously unused space above the hanging garments on each side for two removable compartments. One is waterproof, the other is mesh. It also has a compartment perfect for ties.

The bag also worked great as an additional bag for leisure travel. I used it for suits on my cruise and I found that the garments out of the bag were ready to wear. I folded my dress shirts and they fit in the front pocket. There was still room to pack a few overnight essentials, just in case I had to check my rolling bag on my flight.

The Tumi Alpha Garment Carrier (style  no. 22136) is currently available at amazon.com for $280.
