DINING

At the hotel’s Restaurant Gui, just off the lobby, I waited for about five minutes at the maitre d’ stand before someone arrived to seat me, and when he did, he seemed a little baffled that I wished to have dinner, although it was early evening, and other diners were being served.

During the course of my dinner, the restaurant gradually filled with business people, who also clustered at the adjoining bar. Candles provided soft lighting throughout the restaurant, and the atmosphere was convivial and cozy. From the healthy, contemporary Finnish menu, I chose reindeer risotto (the reindeer medium rare, as recommended by the waiter), and for dessert, chocolate fondant.

The meal was satisfying and delicious, the ingredients fresh and local, and I felt full without feeling stuffed.

BOTTOM LINE

The last thing jet-lagged travelers need is insufficient signage directing them to their hotel upon arrival at the airport. However, once I was within the Hilton Helsinki Airport, it didn’t feel like an airport hotel at all, but rather like a little slice of Helsinki, and the snafu was forgiven. The executive floor lounge offered a quick, handy breakfast, and Restaurant Gui was a delight, as well as an superb venue for entertaining clients.

Hilton Helsinki Airport is an easy base from which to do business in the immediate area (it’s a 30-minute drive to the city center), providing all the technology and comfort that the business traveler needs.
