Sofitel Washington DC Lafayette Square – Hotel Review

After a drive of 136 miles (218 km) from Philadelphia  in The Diesel Driver’s new Mercedes-Benz E350 BlueTec, FBT Editorial Director Jonathan Spira and I arrived at the Sofitel hotel in the center of Washington, D.C. The hotel, situated in a renovated, historic building from 1880, is on Lafayette Square and just a stone’s throw from the White House and other landmarks.

Immediately after I pulled up, a bellman came out to help with our luggage. Together with our bags, we were escorted into the lobby. The elegant marble and wood foyer created a warm feeling upon entering the hotel. Paintings and photographs from famous sights of Washington and Paris completed the look.

Check-In  was quick and Jonathan and I received the keys for two superior rooms on the 4th floor . We were escorted to the rooms and provided with a short and efficient overview. My luggage arrived a few minutes later along with a small welcome gift basket which contained of a variety of fresh fruits, chocolate, and bottled water.

My room was furnished with a king size bed and a desk. The 42” inch LG flat-screen TV was positioned in front of my bed while a Bose sound system was also at hand. Several photos of Washington (Lincoln Memorial) and Paris (Eifel Tower) were on the walls.  Since my corner room had three large windows and was located above a busy street, I was worried that I might not be able to sleep due to noise.  The room, however, was very quiet and, much to my own surprise I slept well and woke up refreshed and ready for the upcoming day’s meetings.

The writing desk in my room provided proper and sufficient work space. I was able to store and charge my laptop and several other devices. Remarkable to note is the USA / EU AC adapter which comes standard to every room, a nice touch.

Internet access was provided via LAN cable at the desk or via Wi-Fi at a rate of $xx  for 24 hours.  This was the one Achiilles heel we found at the property as the Internet connection was slow and I lost  connectivity several times. We saw an average download speed of 0.30 Mbps and an average upload speed of 0.75 Mbps.
