Porsche announced a new SUV, the Porsche Macan.  According to the Stuttgart-based automaker, the name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for “tiger” and “combines suppleness, power, fascination, and dynamics”.  The new off-road car therefore will share these characteristics.

The Macan is Porsche’s fifth model line and will start production in Leipzig in 2013.  Porsche is investing €500 million to expand its factory there to include a body assembly plant and paint shop.  Over 1,000 new jobs will be created at the plant.

“The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine Porsche”, said Bernhard Maier, the automaker’s executive vice president of sales and marketing.

Porsche vetted the name in multiple languages according to Maier to ensure it evokes “positive associations.”
