Omni Mount Washington Resort – Hotel Review

LEISURE ACTIVITIES

In addition to skiing, which is excellent, and looking at the views (there’s a 900-foot-long back porch that’s perfect for mountain gazing, there is a lot to do.  Activities and programs range from mountain biking to horseback riding to golf to fly fishing to rock climbing.  There are tennis courts, a sauna, a Jacuzzi, a shopping arcade, and baby sitting services.

Bretton Woods Adaptive is a non-profit organization that offers activities for those with disabilities and their family members.

DINING

The Mount Washington offers guests the option of the Modified American plan, which includes an American breakfast and a four-course at any restaurant on the property.

Day one, breakfast at the Mount Washington’s main restaurant was, similar to the hotel, big and bold but, unlike the hotel, it was largely tasteless.  On the other hand, the breakfast at the Bretton Woods restaurant (a sister property located on the grounds) on day two was nothing short of spectacular.  (A shuttle bus is available 24 hours a day to go between different parts of the property.)

Stickneys, the hotel’s steakhouse, had a friendly staff, excellent steak, a wonderful lobster/macaroni and cheese dish that we ordered as an appetizer, and excellent service.

The only downside was the meager wine list that was presented at first.  When prodded, a more bountiful wine list magically appeared.

Dinner at the Bretton Arms Dining Room was, however, the culinary highlight of our stay.  The intimate dining room is formal but the staff is not stuffy.  I was impressed that knife rests were on the table and even more impressed by the level of service and food. My entrée of scallops with carrot sauce and spices alone was worth the drive up.  The lemon sorbet was a bit too tart for me but Christian found it more than satisfactory.

BOTTOM LINE

The warm and guest-oriented staff made us forget the lack of heat in our room and the beautiful surroundings made me start to think of excuses for holding a staff meeting or two here.

Still not sure? The hotel itself is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and, in 1986, the United States Department of the Interior awarded it, along with the 1896 Bretton Arms Inn, a National Historic Landmark designation.

And then there’s the view….
