Park Hyatt Tokyo – Hotel Review

DINING

The hotel offers guests several dining options including the Kozue Restaurant (Japanese cuisine) and Girandole, a French brasserie.  I chose the New York Grill, located on the 52nd floor of the tower.  See my separate review of this restaurant here.

Because of my early departure (before any sane person would open up a restaurant for breakfast), I ordered room service the night before.  Promptly at the appointed hour came a wake-up call and a knock on the door with my breakfast.  The breads and rolls were fresh and warm, the eggs were hot and well prepared, the müesli was good, and my signature request, carrot juice with a splash of apple juice, was exactly what I needed to start my day.

BOTTOM LINE

Although my stay was all too brief, the staff’s attention to detail did not go unnoticed, from brief encounters on the phone (every call was answered within two rings), to more complex questions about my airport transfer.

It’s this hard-to-name quality that may very well be the true test of a luxury hotel.  It isn’t the amenities (although they were abundant) or the Egyptian cotton sheets (which were very soft) or even the view (which was unparalleled).  Rather, it’s the people who work in a hotel and the way they interact with guests.  Everyone I encountered, from the person who checked me in upon arrival, to the waiter at the New York Grill, to the bellman who escorted me to my airport transfer, was not merely professional, but somehow seemed to be able to anticipate some of my questions and needs before I might have known them.  Although the Park Hyatt is no longer the only hotel atop a skyscraper in Tokyo, it is the epitome of Tokyo in the 21st century, and its blend of high-tech and luxury makes it a hotel I hope to return to soon.
