Transaero Airlines, Russia’s second largest airline, has announced plans to purchase four Airbus A380 aircraft.

Transaero will become the first customer for the Airbus A380 in Russia, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and Eastern Europe.  The airline plans to begin flying the A380 on long-haul flights in and out of Moscow.  Its current long-haul routes include Hong Kong, London, New York, and Tokyo.

Transaero’s A380s will feature a three-class cabin layout, seating approximately 700 passengers.  Currently, Air France’s A380s seat the most passengers, at 538 seats.

“We definitely see market potential for the A380 in Russia. Passenger traffic in this region is expected to increase at an average rate of 5.6 per cent per year over the next 20 years,” said John Leahy, Airbus’ chief operating officer, in a prepared statement.

Transaero Airlines launched  in 1991 and now serves more than 130 routes around the world.
