The Chattanoogan Hotel, Chattanooga, Tennessee – Review

ROAD WARRIOR SUPPORT

The room’s square-ish wooden writing desk with electrical outlets built into the front would have been more than sufficient for my purposes had it not been for the very uncomfortable chair that was way to low to allow someone to sit at the desk and write or use a keyboard. Many hotels provide comfortable ergonomic desk chairs so that business travelers can attend to, well, business. On a positive note, the hotel’s Wi-Fi was reasonably quick and, most importantly, free.

The hotel boasts a magnificent amphitheater suitable for a variety of meetings and conferences. This is notable because, unlike the meeting space in most hotels – typically a ballroom with tables and chairs placed in neat rows – The Chattanoogan’s is a dedicated facility with permanent and comfortable seating.

DINING

The hotel’s main restaurant, the Broad Street Grille, is closed on Sunday evenings so I dined at the Fondry, a lounge offering lighter fare. My brisket was served barely warm but, after I sent it back to be reheated, was quite tasty. Service was pleasant but very slow, even with just a few people in the lounge.

Breakfast in the main restaurant in the morning was average. The hot food on the buffet wasn’t terribly warm or that tasty but the service was excellent.

BOTTOM LINE

Even a great hotel can be undone by service failures. My encounter with the surly housekeeper on a mission significantly marred my stay; it’s probably the first thing I tell people when they ask about my visit to the Chattanoogan. That’s unfortunate, because the hotel itself is very pleasant, the rooms were very comfortable, the service (outside of housekeeping) was excellent, and the city itself is worth a visit. Just leave a Doberman in front of your door to guard it when sleeping.
