InterContinental Mark Hopkins Hotel, San Francisco Review

DINING

The Top of the Mark lounge has been a long favored meeting place in the city.  The 360-degree view allows one to see Alcatraz, Fisherman’s Wharf, and of course the Golden Gate Bridge.  I enjoyed a drink and the view tremendously, following my mother’s instructions to be there when the fog rolls in.

In addition to drinks, the lounge serves as the hotel’s restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  The view from the Top of the Mark at breakfast was spectacular.  The breakfast I had there itself was a mixed bag.  The assortment of fresh rolls and muffins, fruits, cold cuts, and cheeses was good (but not excellent).  The hot dishes weren’t that hot and were lacking in flavor.  Service was average and that stood out in a hotel where the service was otherwise exceptional.

BOTTOM LINE

The California State Park Commission named the Mark Hopkins mansion a California Historical Landmark in 1961.  Given the combination of top-notch service, superb accommodations, a great view, and the history that envelops it all, I would have to agree.
